The
Project
The proposed design took advantage of the variation in grade to create two areas within the backyard. The linear deck adjacent to the house provides ample room for dining and lounging and with the incorporation of a privacy screen and pergola it defines it as an outdoor room therefore creating a soft merge and extension of the interior space. One is able to transition from inside and out with ease. Stepping down into the ‘garden area’, we immediately change surfaces to a natural stone patio surrounded with lush vegetation. This becomes the second outdoor room, and although separated with stairs, there is sufficient transparency so they are both gently integrated. The project included the development of construction documentation and city permitting for the garage as well as the raised deck. These documents were produced with the following software: AutoCAD, Sketchup, Photoshop, and InDesign. All aspects of the design complied with city code and building permit guidelines. The final result was extremely successful and the homeowners are enjoying the space created.
